Managed and run by Microsoft, Microsoft Bing (formerly known as Bing) is an online search engine.
The app has its roots in previous search engines from Microsoft: MSN Search, Windows Live Search and later Live Search. Bing offers a range of search services, including products for online video, image and map search. It is designed using ASP.NET.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer launched Bing, Microsoft's substitute for Live Search, on May 28, 2009, at the All Things Digital conference in San Diego, California, for release on June 3, 2009.
The listing of search tips as queries are entered and a list of similar searches (called 'Explore pane') built on semantic technologies of Powerset, which Microsoft acquired in 2008, were notable new features at the time.
As of October 2018, with a demand rate of 4.58 per cent, behind Google (77 per cent) and Baidu (14.45 per cent), Bing is the third largest search engine worldwide. Yahoo! Quest, which is primarily driven by Bing, has 2.63%.
